Two suspected armed robbers, Lekan Taiwo and Olasunkanmi Oluwaseyi, arrested by the Oyo State Police Command, have disclosed details of their criminal activities.
The suspects, armed with cutlasses, targeted victims in their vicinity during the day and invaded homes at night. They were among 41 suspects paraded on Friday, July 19, 2024, by the State Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, at the inaugural press briefing.
The duo admitted to murdering a 35-year-old man, Yisa Mohammed, on July 4 at about 7:50 pm, near Igbagbo Village via Iroko in Akinyele Local Government Area.
Yisa’s wife, Anifat, reported the attack to the police, stating that the suspects emerged from hiding under a bridge and fatally assaulted them with cutlasses. Anifat managed to escape and raise the alarm, leading to their subsequent arrest and confession during interrogation.
According to their statements, the suspects claimed Yisa owed them wages which he refused to pay, prompting the deadly assault.
They also confessed to another murder earlier that day, hacking a 60-year-old woman, Mrs. Nike Odediran, to death. These acts of violence were part of their modus operandi, which included robbery and sexual assault against elderly women.
In interviews with the Sunday Tribune, Lekan Taiwo, 25, revealed they targeted victims for robbery, often resulting in lethal violence if resisted. Olasunkanmi Oluwaseyi, 27, corroborated Lekan’s account, admitting to his involvement in the crimes.
Their actions were fueled by desperation due to financial hardship and a history of substance abuse, primarily cannabis.
