Army Dismantles Criminal Syndicate, Apprehends 10, Recovers Arms in Taraba Operations

The Headquarters 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/ Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), in collaboration with other security agencies, has successfully dismantled a criminal syndicate in Taraba State. Acting Assistant Director of 6 Brigade Army Public Relations, Captain Oni Olubodunde, revealed this in a statement on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

According to Captain Olubodunde, the operations, executed with precision and professionalism, occurred in the early hours of July 22, 2024, at Galeri and Kwondo Villages of Ardo-Kola and Bali Local Government Areas, following actionable intelligence from a credible source.

The swift response of the 6 Brigade troops led to the arrest of two suspects identified as Ali Ibrahim alias Yellow and Wetti Alhaji Ibrahim. Recovered from the suspects were an AK 47 rifle and 3 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

Investigations revealed that the apprehended suspects confessed to collaborating with a notorious terrorist leader named Kadogo Fun, who operates in Bangalala and Kampani Zurak areas of Plateau State. Additionally, they disclosed their involvement as mercenaries for terrorist groups operating in Plateau, Adamawa, and Taraba States.

In a separate operation, prompted by persistent attacks and kidnappings by terrorist groups disguised in military attire in Southern Taraba State, the Brigade conducted covert intelligence-led operations. This effort culminated in the arrest of eight suspects: Emmanuel Michael alias Assay, Gabriel Samuel alias Badoo, Fidelis Lumu Utuna, Edward Ochan, John Orhenbaga, Desmond Agbo, Thomas Ikyar, and Shafiu Shaibu alias Odogwu.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the gang leader was affiliated with Terwase Akwaza alias Gana’s Gang. Among the items recovered during searches at the suspects’ residences were 10 Military Camouflage uniforms, Sixty Thousand Naira (₦60,000), and 30 rounds of 7.62MM Special ammunition.

The apprehended suspects are currently in custody and will be handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigations and potential prosecution.

Captain Olubodunde emphasized that the successful arrests and recovery of firearms underscore the effectiveness and collaborative efforts between the Brigade and the local community. He urged the people of Taraba State to continue supporting security agencies in maintaining peace and security, and eliminating criminal elements from the state.

He concluded with an appeal to citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, emphasizing that collective efforts are crucial in building a safer and more secure Taraba State.
