Tensions are rising in Lagos as the announcement of the Oro Festival, scheduled for August 1st to 15th, coincides with planned #EndBadGovt protests against economic hardship.
The festival details were revealed in a viral notice to Lagos residents on Wednesday, July 24, stating, “The Oro Festival will be observed in various communities across Lagos from August 1 to August 15. This traditional Yoruba cultural event involves significant rituals.”

This news comes just days after groups announced nationwide demonstrations from August 1st to 10th to protest economic struggles.
Nigerians on social media platform X are expressing suspicion, accusing the Lagos State government of using the Oro festival for political purposes.
This suspicion stems from a similar situation in 2023, where the Oro Festival was declared ahead of the governorship election. Protesters at that time criticized the timing, believing it was strategically planned to hinder voting for opposition candidates.
Below are reactions to the current Oro Festival announcement.
