Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who has called on all groups planning to participate in the upcoming nationwide protests to submit their names to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states, has revealed that intelligence indicates the involvement of foreign mercenaries in these protests.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Friday, July 26, Egbetokun advised Nigerians to exercise caution and carefully consider joining any protest groups.
“We have been closely monitoring the situation regarding the protest threats,” Egbetokun said. “While some groups call for violent protests, emulating Kenya’s recent events, others advocate for peaceful demonstrations. However, some individuals promote peaceful protests with violent undertones, raises concerns about their true intentions.”
He highlighted Nigeria’s history of violent protests and emphasized that the dangers of unchecked demonstrations are well-known without needing to look at other countries. “We commend patriots who have withdrawn from the protest due to the apparent sinister motives and ignorance of those calling for violence,” he added.
Egbetokun also acknowledged the concerns of those opposed to protests at this time, noting that their fears are well-founded. “We have credible intelligence about the involvement of foreign mercenaries in these planned protests. The Nigerian police urge all Nigerians to exercise caution and think twice before joining any protest group,” he concluded.
