The Nigerian Navy has suffered the loss of Lt. Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, who led a rescue operation to save 59 individuals from the dredging vessel MV AMBIKA 4 at Okpobo Field near the Okpobo River.
In a statement, Naval spokesman Commodore A. Adams-Aliu reported that Lt. Cdr Gwaza died during the rescue attempt. On July 30, 2024, the Nigerian Navy received an emergency call from MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel contracted by Sterling Global Oil Limited. The vessel was at imminent risk of sinking near the turbulent entrance of the Okpobo River.
The Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base BONNY deployed a rescue team of 10 armed personnel in two interceptor boats, led by Lt. Cdr Gwaza. Due to challenging conditions, including strong waves, a reinforcement squadron of three additional boats was sent to assist.
Furthermore, the Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, Nigerian Navy helicopters, and a Nigerian Air Force helicopter were also involved in the search and rescue mission.
All 59 crew members were successfully rescued, but Lt. Cdr Gwaza tragically lost his life. He accidentally fell overboard during the rescue operation, which lasted approximately 10 hours from midnight on July 29, 2024, to 10:00 a.m. on July 30, 2024.
“The Nigerian Navy deeply mourns the loss of Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, who bravely risked his life to save others. His dedication and sacrifice will forever be remembered,” stated Commodore Adams-Aliu.
