Flooding in Jigawa State Claims 16 Lives, Destroys 3,936 Homes

The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that 16 people have been killed and 3,936 houses destroyed due to flooding.

Dr. Haruna Mariga, the Executive Secretary of the agency, reported this in Dutse on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. He stated that the disaster has impacted 10 local government areas within the state.

Mariga indicated that the flooding has also submerged 2,744 hectares of farmland, following torrential rainfall since the start of the 2024 rainy season. The fatalities resulted from building collapses, drowning, and canoe mishaps.

“The disaster resulted in 16 deaths, with 3,936 people displaced, while 2,744 hectares of farmland were submerged,” Mariga said. He also noted that the situation might worsen due to anticipated heavy rainfall.

The agency has provided temporary shelter and distributed relief materials to the displaced individuals to alleviate their suffering. The relief supplies include rice, maize, maize grits, blankets, pasta, and mats.
