On Friday, September 6, Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark made history by winning gold in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.



Mark’s impressive lift of 150kg not only earned her the gold medal but also set new Paralympic and world records, surpassing the previous record held by Nigerian powerlifter Lucy Ejike.
China’s Cui Jianjin won the silver medal with a lift of 140kg, while Mexico’s Amalia Pérez took bronze with a lift of 130kg.
This victory highlights Nigeria’s strong performance in Paralympic powerlifting. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Nigeria won 10 medals, including four golds.
