Azuoto, Okpuitumo Community in Abakaliki Local Government Area has been severely impacted by heavy flooding, resulting in substantial damage to farmlands and property.
The flood has caused millions of naira in losses.
According to Chinyere Nworie, a victim, her rice, yam, and cassava farms were completely submerged. She explained that the community’s proximity to Azuoto and Ebony River, which connects to the River Niger, makes it susceptible to flooding. Mrs. Nworie also mentioned that approximately 96 households in the region were affected by the disaster..
She said: “This flood happened on Saturday, following Friday’s downpour. Our farms have been taken over by the rain flood. Our community has always suffered flooding every year, especially whenever it rained heavily and water overflows the Ebonyi River bank.’’
Amauche Agbo, another resident, described the incident as unfortunate.
The victims are appealing to government authorities for relief materials to mitigate the impact of the flooding.
In response to the situation, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Executive Secretary, Uche Oba, has initiated an assessment of the affected communities. He acknowledged the state government’s concern regarding this recurring issue.
