Putin Declares Russia’s Right to Use Nuclear Weapons in Response to Attacks

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in response to aggression.

He outlined conditions that would trigger such a response, including a conventional attack that poses a critical threat to Russia’s sovereignty.

During a Security Council meeting on nuclear deterrence, Putin called for an update to Russia’s state policy on nuclear weapons to reflect current realities. He emphasized that any aggression against Russia, even if by a non-nuclear state with support from a nuclear power, would be considered a joint attack.

Putin also warned that Russia would consider using nuclear weapons if it received reliable information about a massive attack on Russian territory using aerospace weapons, such as aircraft, missiles, drones, or hypersonic vehicles.

He noted that Russia’s nuclear deterrence policy is carefully calibrated to address modern military threats and risks. The country has adopted a responsible approach to the use of nuclear forces.
