Bauchi Police Arrest Two ATBU Students for Theft and Criminal Conspiracy

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested two final-year students of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University for criminal conspiracy, housebreaking, and theft.

According to a statement released on Friday, September 27, 2024, by the command’s spokesperson, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the suspects conspired to break into the residence of a fellow student and stole his belongings.

Upon interrogation, the students admitted to the crime, claiming that they intended to use the proceeds to fund their final-year project defense.

The statement revealed that on September 26, 2024, around 10:00 AM, the police received a report of two students, Bamusa Mohammed Bako and Yusuf Umar, being assaulted by a group of their peers. Both victims are students at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University.

A team of detectives was dispatched to the scene to rescue the victims and investigate the incident.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspects had broken into the residence of another student, Raji Rabi’u, earlier that morning. They allegedly stole a television, a DSTV decoder, a woofer, a speaker, shoes, a blanket, and a prayer mat.

The statement read: “Intelligence at the disposal of the Command that, on 26th September 2024, around 10:00 AM, an anonymous individual alerted the Divisional Police Headquarters Yelwa about a group of students assaulting two of their peers, Bamusa Mohammed Bako, a 25-year-old 400L student of Urban and Regional Planning, and Yusuf Umar, also known as Danfari, a 28-year-old 500L student of Industrial Design, both from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Yelwa Campus. 

“Upon receiving the report, a team of detectives led by DPO Yelwa was dispatched to the scene to rescue the victims and initiate an investigation.

“Preliminary findings suggest that the suspects conspired and, at about 3:00 AM on the same day, broke into the residence of Raji Rabi’u, a 28-year-old 400L student of Estate Management at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. 

“They allegedly made away with one 32-inch Hisense TV, one DSTV decoder, a woofer, speaker, one pair of shoes, a blanket and prayer mat. 

“The suspects are presently under investigation and have confessed to the offence. They claimed that the proceeds of crime would be used to finance their final-year project defence. They will be prosecuted once the preliminary inquiry is concluded.
