US Government Confirms Magnitude 7 Earthquakes Strikes In California, Issues Fresh Tsunami Warning

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has stated that an earthquake struck Ferndale, California on Thursday. 

According to the US Agency, the natural disaster has been revised to 7 from 6.6. 

Some 4.7million residents of California and Oregon were under the tsunami warning, the National Weather Service said.

The quake, which hit at a shallow depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), was centered about 39 miles (63 km) west of the town of Ferndale, a sparsely populated portion of the northern California coast, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The National Tsunami Center issued a warning for a long stretch of the U.S. West Coast, from Dunes City, Oregon, south to San Francisco and San Jose, California, 400 miles (643 km) away.

San Francisco and a large area of the surrounding Bay Area were under the tsunami warning.

In April, a  magnitude 4.8 earthquake also hit New York City, surrounding suburbs, and New Jersey.

This had been confirmed to SaharaReporters by a resident of the town. 

In a similar report, there were fears in Australia when over 300 people reported feeling the 4.1 magnitude earthquake in the Hunter Valley, Central Coast, Scone and Penrith in western Sydney.

The quake was recorded 7km from Denman in the Upper Hunter Region, 250km north of Sydney, at a depth of 10km in November.

This is according to Geoscience Australia.

According to power supplier Ausgrid, more than 2,500 addresses are currently without power, although no injuries have been reported.
