Okuama Community Leader Dies in Military Detention

The Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State is mourning the loss of its President-General, Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko.

Oghoroko, who was arrested by the Nigerian military in August 2024, reportedly died in detention on Wednesday, 4 December 2024. Sources within the community allege that his death resulted from excessive torture and inhumane treatment.

Concerns are also growing for the health of another detained leader, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, who is reportedly suffering from a life-threatening illness in an undisclosed military facility.

The arrests followed the demolition and destruction of the Okuama community after a clash with the military that left 17 soldiers dead. The community has since initiated multiple lawsuits against the Nigerian Army, seeking justice and compensation.

The death of Pa Oghoroko has further galvanised the community’s demand for justice and accountability. Chief Albert Akpomudje, SAN, who is representing the community, expressed profound concern over the incident.

He stated, “The news of Pa Oghoroko’s death is deeply disturbing. We will be meeting with the family and our legal team to determine the next steps.”
