The Ministry of the Interior of Ghana announced the immediate closure of all land borders on Thursday, 6th December 2024, in order to safeguard the integrity of the upcoming General Elections on 7th December 2024.
This temporary measure, which took effect immediately upon announcement, will remain in force until 6:00pm on Sunday, 8th December 2024. The Ministry stated that the decision is a vital step to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process.
In a press statement issued on Friday and signed by the Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey (MP), the Ministry urged the public to comply with the directive.
“The Ministry urges all citizens and travellers to and from Ghana to cooperate with the State Security Agencies enforcing this directive.” The closure applies to all individuals and organisations, with security agencies stationed at the borders to ensure effective enforcement.
The Ministry’s decision highlights the importance of preserving the credibility of the elections as Ghanaians prepare to cast their votes.
The statement further noted, “The Ministry of the Interior has ordered the temporary closure of all land borders as part of measures to ensure the integrity of the December 7 General Elections.
“This temporary closure is with immediate effect and will end at 6:00pm on Sunday, 8th December 2024.
“The Ministry urges all citizens and travellers to and from Ghana to cooperate with the State Security Agencies enforcing this directive.”
