Nigerian Detained While Attempting to Illegally Enter Bangladesh from India

Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Tripura, India, have detained a 34-year-old Nigerian man, Maxwell Nweke, for illegally crossing the border.

A BSF spokesperson revealed on Monday, 9th December 2024, that Nweke was apprehended at a checkpoint in Kaiyedhepa, Sepahijala district, following a tip-off. The Nigerian national was acting suspiciously along the India-Bangladesh border road, attempting to enter Bangladesh.

Acting on information provided by Maxwell, BSF troops arrested an Indian tout, Suraj Prasad, from Amtali in West Tripura, who was trying to flee the scene on a motorcycle. Prasad, a known figure in illegal border activities, has been the subject of a BSF crackdown.

To combat infiltration, exfiltration, and cross-border crimes, the BSF has intensified its surveillance and operations along the 856 km India-Bangladesh border in Tripura.

The Nigerian, along with Prasad and other apprehended foreigners, has been handed over to local police for further investigation. They will subsequently be presented before the courts.
