Six Family Members Killed in Fatal Accident in Jigawa, Just Days After Another Crash Claims 14 Lives

Six members of the same family have died in a tragic road accident in Jigawa State, just 48 hours after a previous crash claimed 14 lives.

The latest incident occurred on the night of Tuesday, 10 December 2024, along the Auyo-Adiyani road in Guri Local Government Area. Witnesses reported that the victims, all from Adiyani, were returning from a condolence visit to relatives who had been killed in the earlier accident.

This follows a fatal crash on Monday, 9 December 2024, in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area, which killed 14 people. The accident involved a Golf 3 wagon driven by an unidentified individual who lost control after applying the brakes suddenly while speeding. The vehicle somersaulted and fell into a bridge, killing 14 passengers.

The spokesperson for the State Police Command, DSP Shi’isu Lawan Adam, confirmed both incidents and urged commercial drivers to avoid speeding and overloading.

Adam shared details of the earlier crash: “It is with great sadness and sorrow that the Jigawa State Police Command announces the lone fatal car accident that occurred at Tage village, Kafin Hausa LGA on December 9, 2024, at approximately 1530 HRS.

“The accident occurred on golf 3 wagon with reg no. GML 842 XA JGS driven by an unidentified driver, coming from Hadejia town for Makera village Kafin Hausa LGA conveying fifteen (15) passengers.

“When the driver arrived at Tage bridge, which had been damaged during the previous rainy season, he applied a sudden break at high speed, causing him to lose control, the vehicle somersaulted, and fell inside the bridge, killing 14 passengers on board.

“Following receipt of the ominous report, a team of police officers led by DPO Bulangu Division arrived on the scene, evacuated the victims, and conveyed them to Hadejia General Hospital. Unfortunately, fourteen (14) passengers were confirmed dead by a medical doctor on call, including eight females, two (2) men, and four (4) young men, while the driver is still alive but unconscious. He was admitted and is responding to treatment. The case is currently being investigated.”

In response, the Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, extended condolences to the victims’ families and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.

The police have warned commercial drivers against speeding, overloading, and driving under the influence of drugs.

Authorities are working with other security agencies to ensure that erring drivers are held accountable for any loss of life and property damage.
