FCT Police Rescue Abandoned Baby, Arrest Mother

The FCT Police Command has rescued a newborn baby abandoned along a bush path near Crush Rock, behind an unfinished Red Brick Market, Mpape.

On 3rd January 2025, at approximately 10:00 AM, police officers from the Mpape Division’s Juvenile and Women’s Care Section (JWC) responded to a distress call and discovered the infant wrapped in a cloth. The baby was immediately taken to the Mpape Primary Health Care Centre, where medical assessment confirmed the child was in a stable condition.

Following a tip-off from the local community, the baby’s mother, Khadija Ali, was apprehended. During questioning, she admitted to abandoning the child, citing her husband’s desertion and her inability to provide for the infant.

“The FCT Police Command vehemently condemns this act of child abandonment and reassures the public of its commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of society,” stated SP Josephine Adeh, the command’s spokesperson, in a statement.

“The rescued baby will be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care, while the mother will face prosecution according to the provisions of sections 14 and 16 of  the Child Rights Act (CRA) 2003 upon the conclusion of investigations.”

The Command expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation and support in this matter and urged all residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or emergencies via the following emergency lines: 08061581938, 08032003913, 08028940883, CRU: 08107314192, PCB: 09022222352.
