Justin Trudeau Resigns as Canadian Prime Minister

In a significant development in Canadian politics, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation.

This decision follows polling data suggesting that his party, the Liberals, is set to suffer a heavy defeat to the Conservative opposition in an election due by late October.

Trudeau explained that he was stepping down to enable his party to select a new leader, while suspending Parliament until March due to a political deadlock.

At 53 years old, Trudeau confirmed he would step down as leader of the Liberal Party, a position he has held since 2013.

The Prime Minister, who has governed Canada since 2015, faced growing calls to resign from his own MPs amid disappointing polling results.

Earlier in December, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned following policy disagreements, particularly regarding how to manage potential US tariffs imposed by Donald Trump’s incoming administration.

With Trudeau’s resignation, the Liberal Party must now appoint an interim leader to assume the role of Prime Minister ahead of a special leadership convention.
