Emmanuel Petit Brands Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘One of the Worst in His Position’ After Poor Display Against Man United

Emmanuel Petit has branded Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘one of the worst in his position’ after his poor display against Manchester United.

Alexander-Arnold had a night to forget against Manchester United last Sunday as it was from his mistake that Lisandro Martinez scored the opening goal. The Real Madrid-bound full-back’s defensive credentials were questioned by many, including former United legend and pundit Roy Keane, who mockingly said that he is more likely to get a move to League Two side Tranmere Rovers than Los Blancos.

Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has now joined the bandwagon as he raised questions over the 26-year-old’s defensive abilities and even labelled him as “one of the worst in his position”. Alexander-Arnold has entered the final six months of his Liverpool contract and is still far from agreeing to sign a new deal at Anfield.

Speaking to DisCasino, the former France international said: “I’ve always had the same opinion on Trent Alexander-Arnold, he’s a great player with technical ability, amazing passing and vision, but he’s not a defender. He hates it. When you play in a team like Liverpool, they can handle that weakness, but they almost lost to Manchester United at Anfield because of him. The way Alexander-Arnold defended was horrible, he was so lazy for the Lisandro Martinez goal.

“I’m being harsh, but I’m not surprised about his ability to defend either. With the ball, Alexander-Arnold is the best in his position, without the ball, he’s one of the worst. This game meant a lot, he knows that as he’s from the city and Liverpool is in his DNA.”

The Premier League leaders will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on Tottenham in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final tie in north London. Liverpool are due to face Accrington Stanley in the third round of the FA Cup three days later.
