Nigerian Correctional Service Denies Report of Self-Confessed LASU Student Killer Ayomide Adeleye’s Escape

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) has dismissed reports circulating online that Ayomide Adeleye, an awaiting-trial inmate accused of murdering a Lagos State University student, has escaped from custody.

In a statement released on Monday 6th January 2025, by Deputy Controller of Corrections Abubakar Umar, the NCS clarified that Adeleye, with Custody Number S-1995/24, remains incarcerated at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kirikiri, Lagos.

Adeleye was remanded at the MSCC on 26th September 2024, by the Ogba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on charges of kidnapping and murder. The court further ordered his continued detention on 16th December 2024, pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Umar acknowledged that another inmate named Ayomide Adeleye was admitted to the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, on 6th March 2024, on theft charges. However, this individual was subsequently discharged from custody on 14th April 2024, following a court order.

“The Service wishes to categorically state that the Ayomide Adeleye remanded for kidnapping and murder remains in our custody at the MSCC, Kirikiri, Lagos,” Umar emphasised.

He condemned the initial reports as misleading and aimed at damaging the reputation of the NCS. Umar urged media outlets to verify information thoroughly before publication to avoid disseminating false information to the public.

Acting Controller General of Corrections (Ag. CGC) Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche MFR, mni, reiterated the NCS’s commitment to ensuring the safe and humane custody of all inmates while emphasising their focus on rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
