The Metropolitan Police in the UK have handed over a complete file of evidence regarding an English Premier League footballer accused of rape to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which will now decide on the next steps, according to ESPN.
The player, aged in his thirties, was arrested in July 2022 in connection with an ongoing rape investigation. He has been interviewed twice under caution—once in February 2023 and again in November 2024.
Due to legal restrictions, his name has not been revealed. Despite the investigation, the player has continued to play for his club and denies the accusations.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed that “a full file has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and detectives continue to work with prosecutors.” They also assured that those who have come forward with claims are being supported by officers.
The CPS is the agency responsible for making decisions about criminal prosecutions in England and Wales. They will assess whether there is enough evidence to charge the player.
The alleged rape took place in June 2022, and during the investigation, the player was arrested again in connection with two separate rape allegations from 2021. These accusations involve a different woman in her twenties, with one incident alleged to have occurred in April 2021 and the other in June 2021.
In February 2023, the footballer was interviewed about a further sexual offence involving a third woman, which allegedly took place in February 2022.
However, police have decided not to pursue the matter related to June 2021, as the legal requirements for that case had not yet come into effect at the time of the alleged incident.
The case is ongoing, and the CPS will now determine if charges will be brought forward.
