The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old herdsman, Mohammed Usman, for the unlawful possession of an AK-47 rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition.
Usman, a native of Borno State, was apprehended on 7th January 2025, during a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by the Safer Highway Patrol Team along the East-West Road in Bayelsa State.
According to police sources, Usman was travelling in a commercial minibus when it was signalled to stop for inspection. While two other passengers fled the scene, Usman was arrested.
A search of Usman’s belongings revealed an AK-47 rifle and two magazines containing 30 rounds of ammunition.
The Bayelsa State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Musa Mohammed, confirmed the arrest to SaharaReporters. He stated that the suspect is currently in police custody and that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
