Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria, Vanguard reports.
She arrived in Abuja on Wednesday, 22nd January.
Recall that on 23rd March 2023, a UK court found Senator Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and their doctor, Dr. Obinna Obeta, guilty of trafficking a trader from Nigeria to the UK to harvest his organ, a crime under the United Kingdom Modern Slavery Act 2015. The jury concluded that they had conspired to bring the 21-year-old to London to exploit him for his kidney.
This verdict marked the first conviction of its kind under the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015.
Ike Ekweremadu was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Beatrice received a six-year sentence despite citing health concerns during the proceedings.
Dr. Obinna Obeta, who assisted the couple in the organ harvesting process, was also sentenced to 10 years in prison.
