Ebonyi Accident: Another Prospective Corps Member Dies

Another prospective member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has tragically died from injuries sustained in a road accident while en route to the orientation camp in Ebonyi State.

The accident occurred on Wednesday, 22nd January 2025, along the Okposi axis in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state.

The victims had boarded a bus operated by Enugu North Mass Transit and were heading to the NYSC camp in Afikpo Local Government Area when the vehicle collided with a truck parked by the roadside. One of the corps members died at the scene, while her fellow passengers were taken to King David Umahi University Teaching Hospital in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area.

The hospital spokesperson, Mr. Agwu Nwogo, confirmed the sad development in a statement on Friday, 24th January. He disclosed that three more victims, including another corps member, had passed away.

According to the statement, 13 victims were rushed to the hospital around 3 pm on Wednesday by military personnel, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other emergency responders. Upon arrival, two victims succumbed to their injuries, two were transferred to the surgical ward, and the others were admitted to the accident and emergency ward.

“Notably, one corps member escaped without injuries, while the driver sustained severe cervical injuries,” Mr. Nwogo said.

The total number of deaths from the accident has now reached four, including two prospective corps members. “The other survivors are now recuperating, and hospital officials are optimistic about their chances of a full recovery,” he added.
