Argentina to Exit WHO After US

Argentina has announced plans to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), following a similar move by the United States last month.

The then-US leader initiated the withdrawal process on their first day in office, 20th January, citing the WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global health crises, as well as concerns over US funding contributions.

Argentina’s President Javier Milei, a known ally of the former US leader, cited concerns about the WHO’s management of health issues as the reason for Argentina’s planned withdrawal.

Presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni stressed Argentina’s commitment to national sovereignty, particularly in health matters, and criticised the WHO’s pandemic guidelines, claiming they resulted in the “largest shutdown in the history of mankind.”

Critics of the decision have raised concerns about the potential impact on Argentina’s access to vital funding and medical resources. They also argue that such a significant move requires congressional approval, suggesting the unilateral action may be legally challenged.

The withdrawal process is expected to take one year from the date of formal notification. Argentina will continue to meet its financial obligations to the WHO during this period.
