A 13-year marriage between Gaminana Aminat and Musa Abdulrahab was dissolved by a Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Thursday, 27th February, following Aminat’s petition citing disrespect and physical abuse.
Judge Aliyu Kagarko granted the divorce according to Islamic Law, based on Aminat’s claims of her husband’s misconduct and lack of respect. He ordered Aminat to observe “Iddah,” a three-month waiting period before entering into another marriage.
Aminat testified that she and Abdulrahab were married in 2012 under Islamic Law and have three children. She stated that Abdulrahab had consistently displayed disrespectful behaviour towards her and her parents. She alleged that he routinely assaulted her during disputes and insulted her family members when they attempted to intervene. Despite attempts by both families to mediate, Abdulrahab reportedly refused to change his behaviour.
“We are constantly fighting, and I can no longer endure the pain,” Aminat told the court. “I am no longer willing to tolerate his misconduct and disrespect towards me and my parents. I want this marriage dissolved due to the physical abuse, lack of care for me and the children, and disrespect for my family.”
The court granted Aminat’s petition and dissolved the marriage.
